If you haven’t caught the millennium bug yet, you will soon.
Y2K style is back – good news for anyone sporting their favorite velor tracksuit or bootcut jeans.
“When walking down the street today, I feel like I’m back in the era I love – the Noughties!” says celebrity stylist Gemma Sheppard. “And it’s all thanks to Gen Z digging into major fashion trends from the past, on platforms like TikTok.”
This is a major trend that inspired the Noughties to join…
Sheppard says miniskirts are a big feature of spring/summer fashion shows. “Skirt lengths go up (and up!) and waistlines go down, down, down,” she said.
DJ and celebrity stylist Alexis Knox agrees, saying: “Miu Miu and Saint Laurent have plenty of answers for… The wide belt-sized mini skirt is back.
“Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, and Kendall Jenner have been following the trend, teaming them up with high heels, knee-high boots, crop tops and long jackets.”
If showing off all that skin isn’t on your to-do list, Knox suggests the micro-mini works brilliantly with block black tights.
“Pair a cardigan and you have the look all season long,” he said. Or wear it “with knee-high boots, a crisp white shirt, and an oversized blazer for a sexy, sleek look.”

“After winter neutrals, the bright colors of the 2000s are back – think rich, bejeweled colors and a burst of neon,” says Sheppard. “To stop you looking like you’re at a party all night, sports neon is like a sunset – not like a glow stick.”
Sheppard says hot orange complements many skin tones, and the modern way to wear it head-to-toe – be it as a trouser suit or a fabulous maxi dress.
“If you want to reduce the look a bit, just add a monochrome accessory,” he advises.

“The dress slips back, and it’s a versatile item,” says Sheppard.
“In cold weather, they can be worn under a long-sleeved T-shirt or even a chunky jumper, then once the sun comes out, add strappy sandals. Team with great statement jewelry for a night out.”

“Jean styles are changing,” says Sheppard. The long reign of skinny jeans is over, and “replaced by a bona fide Noughties staple: the bootcut, a favorite for its slimming effect – tight around the hips and upper thighs, then flared with the ankles helping to balance your shape.
“Most popular designs are high-waisted, but for a truly authentic Noughties feel, opt for a low-rise – worn with a simple white shirt tucked in the middle of the waist, with the rest hanging.
“Throw in a pair of boots, and you’re instantly ready for any occasion.”

“Kim Kardashian can’t get enough of these sporty cover glasses, and not just as a daytime look – but for date night with Pete. [Davidson, her partner] too,” said Knox.
“Whether your budget is Balenciaga or Boohoo, there are plenty of ways to rock the trend.”
Cover sunglasses can be divisive, so Knox says: “If this trend makes you feel like RoboCop, just use shades in place of a hair tie.”

Thanks to the reboot And Just Like That…, the aesthetic of Sex And The City became the perfect moment. Sheppard said: “Carrier Bradshaw’s bag of choice has never been a sensible carry-on, but a micro-bag. Think Fendi baguettes or Louis Vuitton Multicolore bags – and small bags are definitely back this season.
“Unfortunately, you may only be able to put in your credit card, lipstick and front door key, but at least you won’t find Melody Pop (remember that?)

“Under the guise of the Regencycore trend, the corset top makes another look,” says Sheppard. “Perhaps because of the success of period dramas like Bridgerton, this season, corsets are appearing with and without sleeves, and in fabrics like satin and lace.”
Fortunately, he says they are no longer designed to destroy organs. Worn with a shirt, they look great with leather pants when you’re out for drinks with friends.
