The biggest fashion night of the year, the Met Gala, taking place on Monday, May 2, invites all of the biggest celebrities to hit the red carpet in dazzling looks for this year’s theme “Gilded Glamor” in part two of the Costume Institute exhibition titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” which focuses on American fashion. Between Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe gown, Blake Lively’s dress transformation, and Cara Delevigne’s barely-there look, it’s hard to pinpoint the star of the night. But fashion is not the center of attention all night long. After photos from inside the event started popping up online, all eyes were on one particular event that no one expected: Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter.
The two stars are seen in a photo that Mode photographer Sinna Nasseri posted on May 5. In a carousel post on Instagram, Mode highlights nine photos of the night. If you take a closer look at the fifth photo with Sebastian Stan rocking his hot pink fit directly with Kim K and Kendall Jenner to his right, you’ll see Rodrigo and Carpenter in the middle of a conversation behind him. Even though the singer was not tagged, fans were quick to notice the unexpected moment. Rodrigo is easily recognizable by the purple butterfly clip in his wavy hair and the purple gloves that are part of his custom Versace outfit. Carpenter, on the other hand, has his back to the camera, but his long blonde hair and Paco Rabanne’s two glistening pieces suggest that he is indeed talking to Rodrigo.
So, what’s the problem? Well, it all started when Rodrigo released his hit song “driver’s license” in January 2021. Although Rodrigo never revealed who the breakup song was about, rumors were rampant that the song’s lyrics referred to a difficult relationship with him. High School Musical: Musical: Series co-star, Joshua Bassett. The lyric, “You’re probably with that blonde girl, who always has my doubts, she’s a lot older than me,” speculates about Carpenter, who is blonde and three years older than Rodrigo. Although never confirmed, Bassett was rumored to be dating Carpenter when they were spotted at a Harry Styles concert in October 2021, and the couple showed off matching costumes for Halloween as Sharkboy and Lavagirl in a TikToks series. The love triangle goes awry when Bassett and Carpenter each release their own song that ambiguously hints at relationship drama.
While the singers continue to channel their energy in emotional tones, one can hope that Rodrigo and Carpenter have forgotten about the boys’ drama, even if it’s only for one night.
