FASHION is a fickle friend, trends come and go, and if you don’t follow them, you can end up with a style that looks a bit out of date.
Luckily for us fashion expert Lydia Tomlinson is here to give us some tips on what styles might make you look old-fashioned.
According to Lydia, the all-fitting look is a thing of the past – especially with today’s oversized clothing trends.
If you go for this look, Lydia adds that it definitely should NOT be worn with heels: “It looks a bit old-fashioned, and looks a little twee” she says.
To demonstrate this no-go look, Lydia wore skinny jeans, high heels, a tight low cut top, and a fitted blazer.
One way to update this style for the current trend is to wear an oversized blazer and some baggy trousers instead of jeans.
Stick to one style
Lydia suggests that using a feminine or masculine aesthetic is not a good look for most people.
He adds that all feminine can be a bit “dating” while an all masculine look may be “unattractive.”
Lydia thinks that you should find a balance between these two styles for a more modern adult look.
An example of an all-feminine look was shown by Lydia who wore pearls, a headband, a silk ribbon blouse, pleated shorts, and lace-up heels.
While this style may have been popular for 5-10 years, it can make you look a little out of date now.
Instead, Lydia suggests adding some “slim tailored trousers” as this will give you a less “girl” look and you’ll look a lot more sophisticated.

If your previous style was more masculine with oversized shirts and pants, Lydia suggests striking this balance by pairing an oversized top with a pencil midi skirt.
We all remember logo mania a few years back – the big Gucci belts and Louis Vuitton bags were everywhere. This look has since gone out of fashion according to Lydia.
“When you stack a logo on it, it just doesn’t look good,” he said.
Showcasing this look, she carried a Louis Vuitton covered in the logo, and sported sunglasses and a Gucci belt. Lydia adds that while she sees each one separately “when you put them together, it’s too much.”
To update this look, Lydia suggests a less “flashy” logo like a bag with more subtle branding, rather than the logo or the overall print. You can also consider slimmer belts instead of the previously popular bulkier ones.
While florals will always be popular in the summer, Lydia suggests that the time for bright florals has passed, though she adds it will likely be back in fashion in a few years.
Demonstrating this look Lydia shows off an outfit she’s worn before when this look was trendy – a bright floral jumpsuit.
To update this look, Lydia suggests switching to a different pattern, one example being paisley.
He adds that with florals, and bright ones in particular, it’s easy to go wrong. One way this can happen is with a “big blouse flower” because it “looks a bit old fashioned now.”
Another worn look is the fitted bouclé jacket, Lydia stating that this has been “done to death.” Adding that these are shops all over the highway for a number of years – Zara in particular.
Like any other fitted piece of clothing, this jacket has been driven by the new oversized trend. Lydia adds that you can replace a fitted bouclé jacket with a large blazer for a more contemporary look.
Finally, Lydia points out that you probably don’t want to throw out these old, worn-out items as they might be back in trend in the years to come.
